Celebrating International Day of Education: The History and Why It’s Important

International Day of Education is a day to celebrate the importance of education in our lives. It is celebrated on the 24th of January each year. International Day of Education offers us an opportunity to reflect on how far we have come since then and what still needs to be done before all children can access quality education worldwide. Education is a human right, not a benefit or an advantage.

History of International Day of Education

The idea of an international day of education was first proposed by the United Nations Educational on December 3, 2018. It was proclaimed by the United Nations as a means to promote peace and understanding among peoples through cooperation in education. The date was chosen for this observance, the 24th of January marks the anniversary of the signing of the UNESCO Constitution. Since then, the 24th of January has been recognized as the International Day of Education by people around the world.

Why is International Day of Education Important?

Universal access to quality education is one of the most important tools we have to achieve sustainable development. Education is not only about acquiring knowledge but also about shaping our values and attitudes. It helps us understand different cultures and develop empathy for others. When all people are given access to education, it leads to social progress, economic growth, and peace.

The United Nations International Education Day is a day to raise awareness about the lack of access to proper education in many parts of the world. There are some nations where no formal teachers exist, schools or learning resources are available, and some even use education for their own ends, molding future generations as they wish. Education is a global human right, and we should do everything possible to guarantee that everyone has access to it.

When It Comes to Reading, Not Everyone is Lucky

Observation and reading are the first stages of educational development. Everything we know has been learned this way. We began by studying nature, people, and explored space in order to learn from them. Then, to expand our perspective and comprehension, we read numerous books about them.

Reading is an inseparable part of learning in all steps. However, not everyone is lucky to have developed their reading skills. Almost 20% of the people have dyslexia and other reading challenges according to the Dyslexia Yale Center. Reading is the most important aspect of learning, but it’s a tragedy that not everyone can do it. Tens of thousands of kids and adults are being denied a decent education due to reading difficulties such as dyslexia and other learning disorders.
